* * * *

“I’m so sorry I’m late,” the man said as Karl opened the door. “My flight was delayed.”

The old man shook his head. It had been a horrible few days and his mind wasn’t functioning up to speed. “Pardon?”

“I’m Doctor Bryant,” the man in the doorway said.

Alarmed flooded Karl as he stared at the doctor’s credentials. If this was Dr. Bryant who had he left with Mrs. Garant? He ran to the stairs, activating the bedroom defenses as he went. Maybe he wouldn’t be too late...

A man’s yell sounded through the door then stopped. Karl leaned against the rail beside the room, exhausted from his race up the stairs. He was just an old man, not used to excitement. Maybe he should have chosen the body upgrades Mr. Garant offered, even with the constant medication.

After a moment his strength returned enough for him to disarm the bedroom and open the door. The man he’d mistaken for the doctor lay just inside, smart wire wrapping him mummy-like. Karl stepped over him, sniffling his distaste. Thankfully Mrs. Garant did not appear harmed. Karl slumped with relief. Perhaps now the real Dr. Bryant could help her.

As he watched, her head twitched and her eyes opened.

“Mrs. Garant!”

Her eyes fought to focus. “What happened?”

“Oh madam, I am so sorry to tell you. Your husband has been murdered. I found you in a coma and called a specialist for you.” He watched, astonished, as she sat up.

“I don’t need a specialist,” she said. She pointed at the figure on the floor. “Get rid of that.”

Karl hurried to comply. “Of course. Yes madam.”

When the door finally closed behind the old man, Mrs. Garant climbed carefully off the bed. Her body was stiff from not moving for three days, despite the smart bed’s ministrations. She shuffled over to the dresser and looked in the mirror. Not bad for a forty-five year old woman. Hardly any wrinkles. But Theo had never fully appreciated her, always too interested in his work. So she got interested too and found a way to duplicate enough functionality to fool him when he “transferred” her mind to his body. She designed her own self-induced coma to be broken when Garant reattached the wires for transfer so she could confront him. He wouldn’t get her body without a fight. Of course, she hadn’t anticipated there being someone else as well...

She smiled at the image in the mirror. “We beat him, Bobby. Shall we go out for some fun?”

I couldn’t agree more.
